A spot for thoughts and revelations, and maybe some useful teaching strategies.
Useful Thoughts
Advice from a mentor teacher: Don't smile when you're addressing the whole class. One on one or outside class, by all means, but when you're at the front speaking to the group, you need to set a strong tone.
I tried not smiling (as my 1st inclination was to smile and show myself to be a happy person) when speaking to small groups, and found they did show more respect, as they are clearly used to this treatment from authority figures. Is that good? Bad? Thoughts?
Diana-someone joked and said that teachers shouldn't smile until October because if you want a good class you need to establish authority at the beginning and then it's smooth sailing after that. I struggle with being authoritative in class, so I welcome any suggestions as well.

Diana-Is anyone out there like me teaching a course on a subject they have limited knowledge about? So I have never had a child and I am supposed to teach Parenting; this week on pregnancy. I have found this website useful and thought maybe you might too: http://www.sexualityandu.ca/teachers/index.aspx It's got some strategies and lesson plans already laid out. Hope this helps.
Also, if you have any lessons for a Food and Nutrition class I'd love to see them. Again, something I'm supposed to teach...it is like asking me to teach Baking when all I can do is cook a scramble egg. Help!
RUBRICS - WTH!!??? I was asked to make a couple rubrics for a History class - one rubric for group work and another rubric for an individual presentation. I have no idea how to do this - I was not taught (yet) and when reading in some text books and on the internet explanations aren't clear. So while browsing on the internet looking for answers I came across this web page (some of you may already be familiar with this site).
I feel kind of dirty using it but it helps A LOT and it works for now (especially since I have no clue how to make one). Hope you can get some use out of it too! - Mabel
